Welcome to Troop 37 of Los Altos, California!

The Kayak Troop

Boy Scout Troop 37 meets at Los Altos Youth Center at One North San Antonio Road most Monday nights at 7:30PM.  Boys from 11 to 18 are welcome (10 if completed 5th grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award). We have many fun trips and events to choose from, typically 40-45 per year, which suits the needs of boys who have other activities.  We are able to offer a rich program thanks to our size (over 140 registered scouts), the leadership of our older scouts, and the scouters and parents who support them.New scouts build their own kayaks each spring with help of parents and the troop.  We regularly hike the tallest mountains in the Bay Area. We have an active orienteering program and took first place among 48 scout groups in the 2010 Bay Area Scout Orienteering Championships. In the winter, we enjoy skiing and building snow caves.

We offer three weeks of camp most summers; for example one week at troop-run Kayak Camp north of Tahoe, a second at council-run Camp Oljato at Huntington Lake in the Sierras, and a third at Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island. We also offer at least one high-adventure trip each summer suitable for older scouts, which in the past several years have included backpacking at Philmont in New Mexico, canoeing at Northern Tier in Minnesota/Ontario, sailing and scuba at Sea Base in Florida, and sailing on a tall ship in Washington's San Juan Islands.  Our scouts also participate in National and World Jamborees.  Older scouts have excellent opportunities to learn and practice leadership skills as trip leaders and troop officers.

The troop has a dozen scheduled service projects each year, and another dozen Eagle Scout projects.  You’ll find us at community events in Los Altos, and results of our projects at parks, schools, and streets throughout the area.

The troop was founded in 1917 when Herman Peters organized the Troop and had the first meeting at McDuffie's Grocery, which is now a bank and is still standing at the corner of Second and Main Streets.  We have an annual award named after Herman Peters for the scout who best exemplifies Scout Spirit.  Edgar McDowell was another important leader in our early years, and we have an annual award named for him that goes to the most active first-year scout.

Scoutmaster:  Andrew Gray  Committee Chair:  Rob Mihalko
